Whale Lipids

by Admin on Jun.30, 2009, under TRAVEL

Stradbroke Island, Australia 149

Somehow I got into this, don’t ask me because I don’t know. We are off the coast of Brisbane testing whale lipids for toxins, specifically those used in pesticides. Apparently they have been drifting to the poles and, primarily in the south pole, affecting humpback whales. Because krill are the “keystone species” in Antarctica, and the humpback whale’s primary food source, we find high amounts of substances like DDT in their fat stores, since metabolization tends to push them from the blood stream to these areas.

I wrote the rest of this post but I’m now revising it since I don’t know how much more I’m allowed to say because it’s a research project.

Oregon Ducks Football Uniforms

I’m not really a fan, but it does show our support of the ever-growing Nike/UO corporate enterprise. Nice to have Goliath in your corner.

Happy Father’s Day

by Admin on Jun.22, 2009, under TRAVEL

Well, it’s hard to make phone calls because of the time change, but in keeping with the other blogs I want to wish Dad a HFD today.

This one is him doing what he loves most: pouring over a map. Taken in Paris. One love.

Sydney Final Pics

by Admin on Jun.15, 2009, under TRAVEL

Always

Took a final walk last night. Attacked by strip club owners, the homeless, and saw an action movie being filmed with a helicopter. Also saw a manhunt take place over the bay with a police chopper. These are the moments.

Renaissance Man: Posture

by Admin on Jun.14, 2009, under RENAISSANCE MAN

Change

This week’s installment discusses the importance of good posture. Why is this important? Because good posture will help avoid a hunched back in old age, make your clothes fit better, and is the groundwork for achieving your body’s peak physical form.

I’m not an expert, but there are a few things that I think most experts would agree upon. In short:

- be active, move around

- strengthen your core, it supports your lower back

- walk with chin parallel to ground, stomach in, and shoulders squared

- stretch whenever possible, do yoga if you can stomach it

are some of the tips that I read in researching for this topic. They stand out for me because they have been the most effective in the shortest amount of time. Good posture increases daily energy because you’re managing the body’s caloric economy more efficiently. I would say that most of the other goals in ones life, professional or otherwise, revolve around working to perfect one’s form.

Facebook: Brand Yourself

by Admin on Jun.12, 2009, under WORK

Today Facebook provided users with the opportunity to brand themselves by picking usernames in their destination URLs (e.g. facebook.com/myname). We had about 7 accounts we needed to do this for, so naturally not all of those we wanted were acquired, hence why I have a new nemesis: facebook.com/jakob.

This brings us to point number 2. Brand yourself. If you haven’t gotten a facebook username, try to GET ONE TODAY

This process has left a number of people upset, and possibly homeless. Mostly just upset though. Look for mini marketplaces to set up as people sell off their highly valued real estate on the internet’s largest social network.

Also, as I’m typing this a prehistoric bird is squawking outside after mauling a sabertooth tiger. Australia is really crazy.

Sydney Night Out

Sydney Orchestra

Arrived in Sydney and finally got to get out and really take a look around. Went to the obvious spots and took photos. As if people weren’t asking enough questions about us, we bought dinner jackets and went to the symphony in the famed opera house. A very powerful performance from their solo violinist.

Capped it off at a bistro overlooking the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

AFL Game

A few final pics from Melbourne as we sit in the airport on the way to Sydney. There are a few from the AFL game that friend Andy was kind enough to take us to. Melbourne versus Collingwood. Slaughter.

Although we did more than this (I beat up on some kid at Street Fighter 4 at the casino), this is all I’ve got for you. Deal.
